ASSA ABLOY has acquired Portuguese mechanical locking manufacturer Santos, adding a longstanding local producer to its European business.
Founded in 1948, Santos employs more than 140 people. Its headquarters and factory are in Águeda, Portugal, and it generated about EUR 9.3 million in 2025 sales, according to ASSA ABLOY.
The acquisition will strengthen ASSA ABLOY's European mechanical product portfolio and expand its manufacturing footprint in the region. The group said the deal also supports its strategy of growing its core business through targeted acquisitions in mature markets.
Financial terms were not disclosed. The acquisition is expected to be accretive to earnings per share from the start.
Portugal focus
The deal gives ASSA ABLOY a larger presence in Portugal's mechanical locking market through a manufacturer with an established factory base and domestic reach. ASSA ABLOY described Santos as a leading manufacturer of mechanical locking solutions in Portugal.
ASSA ABLOY is one of the world's largest providers of access products and related systems. It employs 63,000 people worldwide and reports annual sales of EUR 13.8 billion.
The acquisition reflects continued interest in conventional hardware and mechanical security products, even as the broader access market increasingly shifts toward digital and automated systems. For ASSA ABLOY, Santos expands a business segment it considers central to its European operations.
Neil Vann outlined the rationale for the transaction in a company statement.
"This acquisition delivers on our strategy to strengthen our position in mature markets through adding complementary products and solutions to our core business," said Neil Vann, EVP & Head of the EMEIA Division.
Local management also highlighted the impact on ASSA ABLOY's operations in Portugal and nearby markets.
"We are committed to growing our mechanical core business, and the acquisition of Santos will help us drive that through expanding our product portfolio and improving our regional footprint," said João Carmo, Vice President & Head of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions Portugal.
Acquisition strategy
ASSA ABLOY has built part of its growth strategy around acquisitions in established markets, particularly where businesses can be integrated into existing product lines and distribution networks. The Santos deal fits that pattern, bringing in a manufacturer with existing production, staff and a defined position in its home market.
Across Europe, mechanical locks remain an important segment for residential, commercial and institutional buildings, despite rising investment in connected entry systems and automation. A factory-based acquisition can also help large groups adjust regional supply arrangements and shorten delivery routes for certain product lines.
For Portugal, the deal places Santos within a much larger international group while preserving the importance of its base in Águeda. The company joins ASSA ABLOY with decades of operating history and a workforce of more than 140 people.
ASSA ABLOY said Santos generated about EUR 9.3 million in 2025 sales and had what it described as a good EBIT margin.
