Ecommpay has added a direct connection to Bizum for merchants operating in Spain, extending its coverage of local payment methods in Southern Europe.

The addition gives merchants access to Bizum alongside Italy's Bancomat Pay and Portugal's MB Way through a single integration. They can offer all three payment methods without setting up separate local banking relationships for each one.

Bizum is widely used in Spain, and its inclusion reflects the importance of local checkout options in European eCommerce. Ecommpay's approach focuses on direct connections to payment methods rather than a more fragmented set of provider arrangements.

That matters for merchants selling across Spain, Portugal and Italy, where payment preferences often differ by country and consumers tend to favour familiar domestic methods. The aim is to reduce the operational burden of managing separate payment service provider settings and banking links in each market.

Roy Blokker, Head of Commercial at Ecommpay, described the situation for cross-border merchants in the region in pointed terms.

"Merchants who want to reach Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian customers are currently navigating a patchwork of local banking relationships, separate PSP configurations, and regional complexity," said Roy Blokker, Head of Commercial at Ecommpay.

Merchants using the integration can access local payment methods alongside cards, digital wallets and other alternative payment methods on the same platform. Settlement is handled directly through Ecommpay, which it says can simplify market entry for merchants targeting Southern European consumers.

Regional focus

The latest step is part of Ecommpay's broader regional strategy to expand access to national payment methods across several markets. By linking Bizum with MB Way and Bancomat Pay, the company is presenting merchants with a single route into three distinct local payment ecosystems.

In practical terms, a retailer or online service provider entering Southern Europe can avoid creating a different technical and banking setup for each market covered by those payment methods. For merchants, the attraction is less integration work and fewer counterparties in payments operations.

Blokker said the company sees consumer familiarity with a payment method as an important factor in whether a purchase is completed.

"We're aiming to simplify the process for merchants looking to enter new Southern European markets through a single integration to payment methods in all three countries, supporting tens of millions of mobile-native payment users," said Roy Blokker, Head of Commercial at Ecommpay. "Customers are far more likely to complete a purchase if they are presented with a familiar, trusted payment method. Connecting to Ecommpay through a single integration for Bizum, Bancomat Pay and MB Way can help merchants trading in Southern Europe improve conversions efficiently and cost-effectively."

Broader coverage

The Bizum connection also sits within a wider effort to make regional payment methods available across a broader geographic footprint. Payment options from markets in Europe, Asia, Latin America and North America are available through Ecommpay's platform.

Founded in 2012 and headquartered in London, Ecommpay provides payment processing and access to more than 100 payment methods through a single application programming interface. Its offering includes global and local acquiring, as well as services such as orchestration, open banking, recurring billing and direct debits.

The addition of Bizum underlines how payment providers are responding to continued fragmentation in consumer payment preferences, especially in Europe, where domestic bank-linked and mobile payment methods retain strong positions in national markets. For merchants expanding across borders, offering those methods has become less a local add-on than a core part of checkout strategy.

Merchants can use the new connection to present Spanish customers with Bizum while using the same setup to reach MB Way users in Portugal and Bancomat Pay users in Italy.
